MA in Urban Studies (MAUS)
IGNOU Master of Arts (Urban Studies) programme details
By 2025, it is expected that two-thirds of people will live in cities around the world. India has more than 30% of its people living in cities, making it the second largest urban system in the world. By 2025, it is expected that half of India's people will live in cities. Too much urbanisation has led to a lot of problems, like transportation, poverty, unemployment, and slums and squatter settlements that aren't allowed by the law. One estimate says that at least 33% of the people who live in cities in India do so in slums, which has effects on development. So, urbanisation will be a problem for urban planners and policymakers in the years to come. So, the key for planners and policymakers today is to make sure that urban development programmes are well planned and managed. Because urban development issues don't get as much attention in high school and college curricula as they should, people don't really understand how important urban problems are. So, MAUS will be useful for people who work on urban development programmes and for recent graduates who want to work in urban development.
The program's goals are: to give people a chance to learn more about urban planning and development; to teach people about urban ecology, sustainable and smart cities, and urban waste management with a focus on improving their knowledge; to teach working urban development professionals and elected representatives of urban local bodies about different theoretical and practical aspects of urban planning and development; and to develop the skills of people who work in urban planning and development.
